3 hour class. Closed door so we can focus and learn in a positive, focused environment.

    1

    Meet with Coaches - Commit

    10 Minutes

Kids meet with coaches and cover expectations and goals. Players will Commit to themselves and their classmates to work hard.

    2

    Dry Land - Prepare

    20/5/20 - 45 minutes

Dry land consists of a 20 minute set, 5 minute break, 20 minute set. Focus is put on flexibility, explosiveness, balance, and core. We discuss how Preparation can impact their game.

    3

    Chalk Talk - Study

    30-40 minutes

We gather around and Study curriculum, talk through game scenarios and decision making. Snacks, drinks and any training materials needed will be provided.

    4

    Ice Time - Execute

    60 minutes

Time to hit the ice and Execute. We do not run drill after drill but we do skate plenty. Emphasis is put on good decision making surrounding curriculum.

  • Approach

    Commit - Prepare - Study - Execute

Our four step approach is dedicated to creating an environment for mental and physical learning, and having fun!

    Commit

Commitment is a choice. We ask that skaters Commit to the process, and themselves, to learn and have fun!

    Prepare

How do we prepare? Mentally and physically. Focus is put on routine and Preparation.

    Study

Players that Study the game make better decisions. Focus is put on this process and why it is important.

    Execute

Now that we have Committed, Prepared and Studied, it's time to Execute. Focus is put on how to read and react the game as it changes.

"There are two options regarding Commitment. You are IN or OUT, no in between!"

VHS is not for players just looking for ice time. We are looking for Committed players eager to listen and learn.

"The desire to win is useless without the desire to PREPARE"

On the wall in the gym at 2018 & 2019 NCAA National Champions - University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs

"90% of hockey is mental. The other half is physical."

    Wayne Gretzky

"Action speaks louder than your coaches"

Coaches cannot do it for you! You have Committed, Prepared and Studied, now go Execute!

  • Why

How much time is dedicated to the mental side of the game? In a sport that moves so fast it is rare that we slow down and learn this way. This is what VHS was created for. Skating, passing, shooting drills, and small area games are important to a child's development. However, if this is the only way we approach coaching, we are leaving out a very large piece of the game.

    Hockey Sense

    Can you develop hockey sense?

YES! Hockey sense is something you can develop. It is hard to do running drill after drill, skating around cone after cone and shooting on net. These are important for skill development and a good use of ice time, at VHS we focus on the mental side of the game. How do we do that? Our four step approach provides an environment dedicated to this. Players will get their body, and mind ready to learn with Dry Land and Chalk Talk. Then we put it all together on the ice with the goal of teaching the kids a specific skill or discipline they can Execute in game play.

    Game Knowledge

What do you do when the puck drops? Where do you go when you don't have the puck?

A lot of young players miss out on the mental aspects of the game. What is a player supposed to do without the puck? Where do you back check? What do you do off the face off? There are a lot of options and the more a player knows and understands about the game the better his or her skill set and ability to read and react as the game develops.

  • About

Developed by Josh Vinge, VHS was created to help players grow their mental toughness, develop hockey sense, and enhance their knowledge of the game leading to better decision making and stronger read and react skills. I grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota and was "forced" into skates at 2 years old. Playing travel hockey for Bloomington Jefferson I was very fortunate to be able to play for a lot of different coaches. The methodical, the hard working, and even the aggressive and punishing kind. Through it all my love for the game continues to grow as does as my approach to coaching. After relocating to Iowa in 2004 I found a men's league, had a couple kids and paid it forward by putting Parker and Bella in skates when they were 2.

Grandpa was so proud.....Mom had no idea what was about to begin!

  • Feedback

"We got great feedback from Landon on his experience, which is unusual. We usually don't get much in the way of feedback from him at all. He's been to a lot of hockey camps and it seems they almost run together for him as far as learning new and exciting things. He said he really liked this camp and the way you dealt with the players. He feels he learned a lot and had fun. He is looking forward to the rest of the sessions he signed up for."

"Wanted to let you know that Owen really enjoyed camp yesterday! He said that's the best one he's been to and he feels like he was actually being taught and learning!"
